  • Drooping and heavy eyelids.
  • Heavy and tired facial look.
  • Limited vision due to drooping eyelids.

Who does upper eyelid surgery suit?

Upper eyelid surgery doesn’t have age limitations. Typically, the procedure is done to clients 30-60 years of age, who have problems with drooping upper eyelids related to functions of the eye and aesthetics.

Upper eyelid surgery corrects a drooping facial visual, heavy feeling, and limited vision. In some situations, the heavy look of the face is partially because of droopiness in the forehead and brows. In this case, a brow lift can be done with upper eyelid surgery.

Planning before the operation

A consultation with the operating surgeon is always needed prior to the procedure. During this consultation, the surgeon will discuss with you, evaluate the situation, and plan the technical aspects of the procedure while taking your individual wishes and needs into account.

The course of surgery and recovery are discussed during this consultation. We will always be honest about the achievable results with every operation.

More Information

Upper eyelid surgery is usually performed under local anesthesia. A calming premedication may be given before surgery.

In upper eyelid surgery, the skin incision is made along the eyelid crease. The incision can be made either with a scalpel or with a laser. Excess skin and muscle tissue are removed. If needed, excess fat beneath the eyelid is also removed.

The procedure takes approximately 60 minutes. The wounds are closed with dissolvable or removable stitches.

Immediately after the procedure, you may have temporary vision difficulties, light sensitivity, tearing, swelling, bruising, and tenderness in the treated area.

You can return home once you have rested for a while in the recovery room under observation. Cold compresses are placed over the eyes in the recovery room to minimize swelling.

Stitches are usually removed approximately one week after surgery. Bruising and swelling usually last for 7–14 days. Scars may take months to fade.

Upper eyelid surgery is generally a safe procedure. However, as with all surgeries, it carries a small risk of complications, such as bleeding and wound infection. It is therefore important to follow the postoperative care instructions carefully.

Possible longer-term disadvantages may include a prolonged tendency for swelling, unfavorable scar healing, and dry eyes.

Rare disadvantages may include damage to the eye muscles and functional problems with the eyelids, such as difficulty closing the eyes.
