Equipment Matters

Laser hair removal is highly effective when performed by experienced professionals with the Candela GentleMax Pro Plus device, which belongs to the absolute world elite. Approximately 90% of dark hairs can be permanently removed with 6–10 treatment sessions. The Candela GentleMax Pro Plus device includes both an alexandrite laser (wavelength 755 nm) and an Nd:YAG laser (wavelength 1,064 nm). The alexandrite laser is the gold standard in laser hair removal, while the Nd:YAG laser can be used for dark‑skinned clients for whom the alexandrite laser is not suitable. This allows us to serve all clients regardless of skin tone.

The alexandrite laser provides a clinically more precise and effective treatment mechanism compared to diode lasers and especially IPL technology. The 755 nm wavelength of the Candela GentleMax Pro Plus is optimally targeted at melanin, enabling highly selective energy absorption directly into the hair follicle. This means the energy is delivered exactly to the right target with maximum power and minimal dispersion into the surrounding tissue.

A diode laser operates at a longer wavelength, and its energy distribution is less selective. Part of the energy spreads over a wider area and does not target the hair follicle as precisely. The treatment efficacy per pulse is weaker, which often means more treatment sessions and slower results.

The difference becomes even more pronounced when compared to IPL technology, which is not a true laser but a broad‑spectrum light pulse. IPL cannot target energy precisely to a specific chromophore (such as melanin); instead, the energy is distributed across multiple wavelengths. This significantly reduces the effectiveness and predictability of the treatment. IPL treatments typically require more sessions, and achieving permanent results is less certain.

Candela is the market leader in hair removal lasers and the most recommended hair removal laser brand among dermatologists worldwide.

Benefits of the Alexandrite Laser:

  • high melanin selectivity
  • precise targeting of energy
  • greater power per pulse

➝ More effective treatments, fewer treatment sessions and a clearly longer-lasting result in the long term.

About Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal with alexandrite lasers works best on brown and dark hair. This wavelength does not affect light, grey, or red hair. The Nd:YAG laser, on the other hand, suits darker skin complexions due to its longer wavelength. Nd:YAG lasers can sometimes be used to remove red hair as well.

Laser hair removal on the body often requires 6-10 treatments. The number of treatments depends on the number of growth phases; some have more and some less. After the treatment, the dead hair falls off in the next 1-2 weeks, followed by the stage in which the skin is hairless and well. This stage lasts for around two months. When the new growth phase becomes visible, it is time for the next treatment.

With each treatment, 10-15 % of dark hair is removed permanently. Clients typically notice softness and weakness in the hair after the first treatments already.

On the face, the hair growth cycle is faster. The treatments typically have 4-6 weeks in between. In women, facial hair growth is often hormonal and results that are like those of the rest of the body might not be attainable. However, facial laser hair removal is liberating; daily plucking, folliculitis, troubles with pigmentation, and social pressure are history after laser hair removal.

More Information

  • No tanning or sun exposure for 2 weeks before the treatment.
  • Do not use self-tanning products.
  • The treatment is not performed on those who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Do not remove hair from the root, meaning no epilation, plucking, waxing or sugaring, for 6 weeks before the procedure.
  • Before coming to the treatment, the area to be treated should be shaved, as the hair must be short during the treatment. If shaving causes itching or skin problems, it is best to do it close to the treatment time. Avoid applying lotion to the skin.

The time required for the treatment will be determined during a free 30-minute consultation. If you book a treatment directly, please reserve enough consecutive appointments for larger treatment areas.

Examples of appointment times required for treatment:

  • Face or armpits: 30 min
  • Bikini: 30 to 60 min
  • Arms: 30 to 60 min
  • Lower legs: 60 min
  • Thighs: 60 to 90 min
  • Back: 30 to 90 min

After laser treatment, a heat reaction may appear on the skin. It can look like a nettle sting and may feel hot. This usually lasts for up to one day. The sensation can be relieved, for example, with SkinCeuticals Phyto Corrective products, which you can purchase during your visit, or with aloe vera cream. As long as the heat reaction continues, saunas, hot baths and exercise that causes sweating should be avoided.

The hair should not be plucked for one week after the treatment.

Sun exposure is not recommended for two weeks after the treatment. Even after this, it is recommended to use SPF50 sunscreen to avoid skin pigmentation.

You may shower immediately after the treatment, and lotion can be applied to the skin. Exfoliation is recommended only after the heat reaction has fully calmed down.

  • Superficial burns on the skin.
  • Pigmentation problems, such as hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation.
  • Heat-induced allergic reaction, which in rare cases may last up to 2 weeks.
  • Paradoxical hair growth in darker skin types.

Many describe the sensation as a rubber band snapping against the skin. Most people find the pain tolerable, especially when considering the long-term results of the treatment. The pain relief methods used at Muotosairaala and treatment performed by an experienced professional can significantly reduce discomfort.

No, it does not. It may feel like there is more hair than before, but the dead hairs do not “expire” even if there is a longer break between treatments.
