Skin Biopsy

A skin sample, known as a skin biopsy, is collected if malignant skin growth is suspected or wanted to be ruled out, or an unclear rash is investigated.

Collecting the Skin Sample

A sample big enough or multiple smaller samples are needed when diagnosing rash. The sample is collected from the newest possible area in the center of the rash. If the rash in question is of a circular shape, the sample is collected from the edge. With rashes that have blisters, a small, whole blister is aspired to be collected. A pathologist evaluates the sample.

Collecting the biopsy always leaves a small mark. The sample is desirably not collected from the shoulders or chest area because these areas have a bigger risk for excess scar growth. With a widespread rash, the area the sample is taken from is chosen from a less-showing skin area if possible.

A Skin Biopsy is Needed if

  • Malignant skin growth is suspected or wanted to be ruled out
  • Diagnosing unclear rash requires additional information
  • A very small amount, around 1-3 mm, of skin growth is removed for diagnosis or other reasons.
