Hyaluronic Acid and Fillers

Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance that can be found in especially the joints and skin in the human body. It, for example, preserves moisture and maintains the elasticity of the tissues.

Filler Treatments Containing Hyaluronic Acid are Popular Aesthetic Treatments.

In these treatments, hyaluronic acid is injected into the skin, under it, or deeper into the tissues. This is a method to restore facial fullness that has disappeared with aging, decrease the lines and furrows appearing on the skin, or improve the structure and elasticity of the skin. Additionally, hyaluronic acid injections can be used to modify facial features (e.g., cheekbone enhancement, jaw shaping, lips).

There are various hyaluronic acid injections, and the substance used is always chosen separately for each treatment.

What Can Hyaluronic Acid Injections Help With?

  • Facial fullness lost because of aging (cheeks, nose corners, mouth corners, temples, lips).
  • Tired-looking eye bags.
  • Decreasing lines and furrows.
  • Skin thinning (face, décolletage, back of the hand).
  • Mild facial asymmetry.
  • Improving facial ratios and modifying facial features (gonial angles, tip of the chin, cheekbones, temples, lips).

Hyaluronic Acid Injections – The Procedure

Filler injections are done by using cannulas or small needles. The injected substances often contain local anesthetics, but in some situations, numbing cream is needed.

The results of the treatment can be seen immediately.

The injected filler slowly dissolves with time; the results typically last for 6-18 months. The injected filler, treated area, and the client’s individual features all affect the lasting time.

Hyaluronic acid injections can always be dissolved by using hyaluronidase enzyme injections. Dissolving the results of previous treatments may be necessary before starting treatment if the previous results are unwanted. The dissolving is done at least a few weeks before the new treatment.

Hyaluronic acid injection treatments are typically very tolerable and safe when in good hands. The treated area may have swelling and bruises after the treatment.

Possible Complications of Hyaluronic Acid Injection Treatment

All injection treatments contain the risk of infection.

An extremely rare side effect of hyaluronic acid injection treatment is a delayed (from weeks to years after the injections) infection and swelling reaction; this can occur after vaccinations and during infections, for example.

The most severe, although very rare, side effect is a blood clot. Sometimes loss of vision has been reported with it. This risk is the greatest with fillers injected into the nose and between the eyebrows.

To minimize the risk of complications, proper knowledge of anatomy is crucial. Only trained doctors and nurses should perform these treatments. The person performing the procedure must be ready to treat even the rarest complications as well, such as dissolving blood clots.
