Botox for Bruxism

Botulinum toxin, commonly known as Botox or BTX, can be helpful in treating bruxism.

Botox for Treating Bruxism

In the treatment, botulinum toxin is injected into the jaw muscles. The effects of the treatment slowly begin after a few days. The final result can be seen after 2-3 weeks. The results last for 3-6 months, and treatments for maintaining the result are therefore needed.

We wish for you to discuss Botox treatment with your dentist before starting the treatment. Botox treatment for bruxism rarely replaces other methods of treatment, such as mouth guards.

Risks of the Treatment

Small bruises are possible in all injection treatments. To minimize bruising, we recommend refraining from using infection pain medication and omega-3 and fish oil supplements for 2 weeks prior to the treatment.

Other possible side effects are jaw strength decreasing and the lower face slimming as the jaw muscles become smaller.

The treatment is not done to those currently pregnant or breastfeeding.

Usually, the client themselves retrieves the medication from the pharmacy and brings it to the doctor’s appointment. The treatment has no value added tax because it is a treatment for illness.

More Information

  • Skin inflammation in the treatment area may prevent the treatment from being performed.
  • Botulinum toxin treatments are not performed during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • To minimize the risk of bruising, we recommend avoiding anti-inflammatory pain medication, omega-3 supplements and fish oil supplements for 2 weeks before the treatment. Anti-inflammatory pain medication, omega-3 or fish oil supplements, or blood-thinning medication do not, however, prevent the treatment from being performed.
