Aesthetic plastic surgery is often considered superficial, and many people may live for years with an appearance-related concern that disturbs them socially, hesitating to seek treatment for fear of being labelled vain. However, aesthetic surgery is often a deeply personal and psychologically meaningful choice related to a person’s wellbeing, not only their appearance. The fact that people are simultaneously expected to have an almost flawless appearance, or at least to be the “best version of themselves”, while at the same time achieving these appearance ideals without methods considered artificial, reflects the contradiction in today’s discussion around appearance and identity. It is, of course, also important to be aware of the risks and of the fact that surgery performed for the wrong reasons does not remove dissatisfaction or solve deeper problems. Therefore, a responsible surgeon does not feed insecurity, but supports the person in their own wellbeing.
Pia has specialized at HUS and has also held a part-time private practice already during her specialization. She works full-time at HUS, with her special area of expertise being the treatment of congenital vascular anomalies. In addition, she performs, among other procedures, breast reconstructions and body contouring surgery, and operates on skin cancers. Her areas of interest include treating changes from aging in the facial area, correcting breast shape, male breast gland overgrowth, breast reduction, breast lift and breast augmentation with fat grafting, upper eyelid surgery, injection treatments, and scar corrections. She is especially interested in fading and slowing down changes from aging in the face. Pia looks at the patient as a whole and recommends a suitable treatment option based on the patient’s individual situation. For her, it is important that the decision to seek aesthetic treatment or a procedure is made based on sufficient information.
