Surgical Mole Removal is Needed, if

  • the mole is suspicious or looks abnormal
  • skin cancer is suspected
  • the mole is difficult or cosmetically disturbing (and laser treatment isn’t suitable)

Surgical Mole Removal – The Procedure and Recovery

The procedure is done with local anesthesia. Before the surgery, the area is disinfected and numbed with numbing injections.

The doctor removes the mole surgically, and the surgery wound is stitched. To confirm diagnosis, a pathologist often inspects the removed mole.

The wound typically heals within 1-2 weeks. The healing of the scar depends on, besides the procedure, the skin’s properties and the location of the mole. The look of the scar can be improved with supporting tape and later with silicone strips or gel.

The optimal aesthetic of the surgical scar can be worked on with laser treatments. Currently, it is recommended that the laser treatment be done soon after the operation, after just one month even.
